Safeway, Inc. is one of the largest food and drug retailers
in North America. Fortune magazine ranked us as one
of the 50 best companies in 2003, and we are a S&P
500 index company. As of March 2006 Safeway operates
over 1,772 stores in the United States and Western Canada,
including 21 Carrs stores in Alaska, 91 Chicago-based
Dominick's stores, 132 Randalls and Tom Thumb stores
in Texas, 42 Philadelphia-based Genuardi's stores, and
329 Vons stores in Southern California and Nevada. Together
we are one of the largest employers of retail pharmacists
in North America.
Safeway also holds a 49% interest in Casa Ley, S.A.
de C.V., which at year-end 2005 operated 119 food and
general merchandise stores in western Mexico.
In addition, the Company has a 56% equity interest in
and a strategic alliance with GroceryWorks Holdings,
Inc., an Internet grocer.
